Colosseum

 

Introduction

The colosseum is a building built in 70- 72 AD, it was finally finished in 80 AD. It was being built by the emperor Vanspersian and it was finished when Titus was the emperor of Rome. It was made for a gladiator arena. The gladiators were prisoners that they had won war against. The prisoners would work some where, like a pit, building which needs to be made and odd jobs here and there until they where chosen to be a gladiator. The colosseum could hold about 50,000 spectators and it is estimated that 500,000 people and over a million animals died.

 

Seating

The colosseum was a massive building and it could fit around about 50,000 spectators. There are 76 entrance gates which were used for the general public. There where also 4 special gates which where grand entrances. The public entrances where numbered to work out the seating areas. The numbers were engraved in the stones in Roman numerals. The special un-numbered gates were used for emperors, wealthy patricians, senators, magistrates and important visitors. The emperor could also access the colosseum through a decorated tunnel which started at the Imperial Palace.
